What to Expect During Labor and Delivery

Relax Your Mind through Preparation by So family
Labor and delivery is one of the most difficult parts of a parent’s life up to that point. This is the time when you will have to face the pain, the stress, and the other issues that come along with giving birth. If you go into labor naturally, you will typically have a decent amount of pain until you get to the hospital. When you call your doctor, they will confirm the status of your contractions and whether your water has broken. Then, they will direct you as to what to do next.

If your labor is being induced, you will schedule a date with your doctor so that you can arrive at the hospital before the baby tries to arrive on its own. You will be induced with a method chosen by your doctor, and most of your pain will be controlled well because you are already in the hospital. If you are having a c-section, you will not even have to worry about labor and delivery in most cases. You will simply schedule your surgery date and then go in on that day to have a surgical delivery of your child.

Once you check in at the hospital, you will be shown to your room. Then, you will get settled in and go through the rest of the labor process until it is time for delivery. This includes checking your dilation rate regularly, monitoring the baby’s heartbeat, and other related tasks. There are four stages of labor: early labor, active labor, transition labor, and pushing. When it’s time for delivery, you may be moved to a delivery room if you are not already there. Then, your doctor will instruct you on what the next steps will be, including the delivery process, pushing, and how to properly push to ensure a smooth delivery.

Once the baby is delivered, you will typically be moved to a regular maternity room out of the delivery room. Your baby will be taken, weighed, cleaned up, and prepared for his or her new life as an infant. If you choose to have pain medication or an epidural, you will typically have these administered early in the labor process to give them time to take effect. The labor and delivery process is not always an easy one, but it can be more relaxing if you are informed and prepared for what you will expect when you are ready to give birth.
