Pool Safety: Learning to Swim & 2010 Summer Figures on Child Drowning

New 2010 Child Drowning Figures from the CPSC & HSC
Do you enjoy aquatic activities? Would you be able to save yourself or someone else should they find themselves in trouble in the water? The American Red Cross states that about 3,500 Americans drown each year, averaging ten deaths per day. More than one in five fatal drowning victims are children 14 and younger.

The CPSC and HSC have released this summers figures on child drownings. There have been more than 350 child drownings and non-fatal incidents since Memorial Day 2010. We've posted a snapshot of these figures below.

So family believes it's important to learn to swim because we believe in the safety of all in and around the water. There are many swimming and water safety programs nationwide. The YMCA and American Red Cross offer many of these programs. Just because summer is coming to an end does not mean the end of the swimming season. Swimming can be enjoyed and taught year round. We are asking all parents to keep themselves and their children safe in and around the water. Watch the So family TV video below for some quick water safety tips.

2010 Summer Snapshot

California 27 drownings; 15 non-fatal incidents
Florida 14 drownings; 19 non-fatal incidents
Arizona 9 drownings; 21 non-fatal incidents
Texas 12 drownings; 17 non-fatal incidents
Ohio 10 drownings; 11 non-fatal incidents
