Managing Parenting, Work and Money

A Balancing Act for Parents by So family
Being a mother or father is a lot of work. There are a variety of roles that you have to take on, no matter what type of family you have. You now have to become the parent, the income-earner, and the accountant for the family finances. You will also have to be the chef, the maid service, and many other things during your time as a parent. However, finding the balance between managing your work, your kids, and your money can often be the most complicated part of parenting for anyone.

Prioritize your life. Figure out how work and parenting mix and which elements of each take priority over another. For example, work is a priority over parenting when the other parent is home for the day, but this might switch if a child gets sick or injured and needs you there for them. Reflect on your own life and how each of these elements impacts your daily activities. Figure out what you can do to balance your working life, your home life, and your checkbook to give your kids the best life possible.

When it comes to work and money, you have to do whatever it takes to provide for your family. However, that doesn’t mean that you have to work 60 hours a week to make six-figures and never see the kids. You can just as easily work a regular 40 hour week like everyone else and make a little less money. As long as the bills are paid and there is food on the table, everything else is a bonus. Financial stability is important to many people, but even those who are accustomed to having more should understand that survival is possible with less. If you can’t juggle the work-kids act very well, scale back at work and show your kids that losing some extra money-based benefits is worth getting to spend more time with Mom and Dad.

Kids will only find money as important as you make it. If you focus on being a great parent and spending quality time with your children, they will find those values in themselves, as well. If you spoil them, work tirelessly, and focus on spending as much money as you can on your children, they will come to value money more than family. Balancing the load between being a parent and being a productive member of society can be a difficult task, but you need to find your own way to make life work for you.
