As we are nearing the end of my favorite time of the year, I am once again reminded of how challenging it can be to maintain a healthy lifestyle during this hectic month. Beginning with a Thanksgiving feast in November (or even pre-Thanksgiving feast, if your family is anything like mine), and continuing with a non-stop slew of holiday parties, festive lunches, late nights baking and tasting, all this extra eating and socializing can make it challenging to fit exercise into your day or week. Have no fear though—you are definitely not alone and there are many resources out there to get you back on your feet and on the road to healthy living! Some of my favorites are:
• This recent article by The New York Times on "Burning Calories, but Not a Hole in Your Wallet" mentions several different money-saving resources and options to help you stay fit on a budget and/or during a time-crunch.
• For anyone living in the five boroughs of New York City, it pays to check out NYC Parks and Recreation Centers. They offer free or low-cost access to indoor recreation spaces in several locations, including exercise equipment, indoor and outdoor pools, tracks and exercise classes throughout the year. More information can be found here.
• The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) does a wonderful job of outlining and explaining physical activity recommendations for children and adults of all ages.
Feeling weighed down by all this information? No sweat! Any bit of physical activity is better than nothing at all! This could include taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking a bit farther away from your destination and walking further, or even walking an extra lap or two around the mall before really delving into the post-holiday sales. What are some of your favorite ways to include exercise into your day?
