Trying to Wind Down by So familyStimulating your child’s brain at bedtime might not seem like a good idea. However, if you are trying to stimulate their brain to sleep well and be healthy, you can find many different ways to do so. Read stories that engage their senses and utilize every ounce of energy that they have left. Give them relaxing baths right before bed and make sure that they aren’t eating lots of sugar close to bedtime. Find ways to engage your child so that they are winding down and still learning, allowing them to have better cognitive development than if you just put them to bed with the TV on.
Bedtime rituals are a part of every child’s life. When you let them read to you, you are engaging their learned skills and making them exercise their brains. This can stimulate better sleep because their brain will be just as tired as their body is. Children need their sleep, and that time before bed is when they are worn out, more focused on you, and willing to listen to what you have to say and do what you want them to do. Children look to you for guidance, and you should take advantage of that to encourage stimulating bedtime rituals that are fun for your child.
Making children read before bed if they don’t enjoy reading is not going to be fun. Finding a book like ‘I Spy’ or ‘Where’s Waldo’ can be a much better way to engage them and make them think when they don’t realize that they are actually doing something that is helping them learn and use their brain. Take advantage of ‘smart’ toys and books that will keep your child learning right up until they close their eyes, without them ever realizing that they’re doing more than just playing or reading before bed.
With so many different types of bedtime rituals to consider, it can be hard to determine which ones are best for your child. Take the time to try out different things, see which ones they respond best to, and determine how you are going to utilize your time before bed so that your child’s brain is stimulated for sleep and extra learning while they aren’t expecting it. Keep these things in mind, because there is never a bad time to make sure that kids are doing everything that they can when it comes to learning and cognition.
