Balancing Personal Time with Family Time

Balancing Personal Time with Family Time by So family
More often than not, when people enter relationships and start families, they often throw all of their time and attention into it. They focus on meeting the needs of their partner and their children and completely forget to take care of themselves. This is unhealthy, to say the least, and can lead to burnout and even a break down. You can’t give your family your very best, if you are irritable and tired all the time. For good health, it is important that you maintain a balance between your personal time and time spent on your family. Here are a few tips for balancing personal time with family time.

Avoid Over Scheduling – This, by far, is the most common way people become imbalanced. Their days are packed full of activities with no wiggle room for down time. Oftentimes parents are juggling a full time job in addition to trying to meet family needs which further compounds the problem. Track activities using a planner or a calendar and refer to it each time something new comes up. Try to spread activities out through the week. If you notice a particularly full day, then try to keep another day empty of anything to do. That way, everyone gets the rest they need to be at their best.

Schedule Time for You – Your day should include time set aside for the things that you want to do. And you should treat that time like any other appointment in your book. For example, if you really enjoy scrapbooking or exercising, then write it on the schedule and make it non-negotiable. This is time for you to relax and tend to your needs. When your needs are met then you are in a better position to give time and attention to others.

Dedicate a Night – A great way to balance personal time with family time is to dedicate a night to each facet of your personal and family life. For example, you can have family game night where everyone enjoys playing games and spending time with each other. Another night could be date night, when you and your significant other go out and rediscover why you fell in love in the first place. You could have a girl’s night out where you spend time with your friends. This way, everyone gets what they need without you becoming overwhelmed with it all. Always keep an eye towards maintaining balance and you will achieve a healthier state of being that benefits everyone.
