4 Tips to Make it a Little Easier by Monica J Going back to school means getting everyone readjusted to old routines or setting new ones for the new school year. This can be a very exciting time of year, but it can easily turn into a stressful period with all of the preparation and shopping. Let's make the beginning of this school year an easy one. Some children have already started school and others are counting down their last few days. Whatever the case, I've listed 4 tips for you and your family to make the new school year a joyous time for all.
1. Shop! Shop! Shop! - Make sure you've checked off everything on the "back to school" list. Allow the children to review the list with you. For children who have already started school talk to them and make sure there is nothing else they require for their classes. They often learn of new things they may need for the year during the first weeks of school.
2. Set the School Night Schedule - Summer schedules are usually more relaxed than the school year schedule, so it's time to have that talk with the kids. Set up a school night schedule and explain to the kids the importance of getting those precious 8 hrs of sleep. For older children you can work on a schedule together and compromise, so they feel as if they have a voice and a little more independence.
3. Homework Time - Homework is a very important part of school and it's important to set aside some simple homework rules for your house. For younger children, you can tell them where and when they should be doing their homework. It may make this process easier if you explain to them why you chose the particular homework place (i.e. at the kitchen table because it's quiet). This way they will have a full understanding of why those are the rules. For older children you can discuss this with them and come up with an agreed upon plan. Again, this will give them a voice and more independence. Those two things are important to tweens and teens.
4. Decorate Those Supplies - Encourage your children to personalize their school supplies. This can be a fun craft for all ages. They will create supplies that they like looking at each day and they will be able to identify their supplies in school. Before doing this craft make sure your child's school doesn't have any rules against personalizing supplies.
With all of the planning, discussing and personalizing you and your family will be off to great start for the new school year. Good luck to all of your children starting a new school year!
